What does eco-friendly food packaging actually mean?
The term gets used loosely. Here's a clear breakdown of what each type actually means — and which is right for your business:
1. Biodegradable food packaging
Breaks down naturally over time through biological processes. The key word is 'over time' — this can mean months or years depending on conditions. Not all biodegradable packaging is compostable. Always check certification claims.
2. Compostable food packaging
Breaks down into natural materials (water, CO₂, biomass) under specific composting conditions, typically within 90–180 days. Industrial compostable packaging is certified to EN 13432 or ASTM D6400. This is the gold standard for eco-friendly food packaging.
3. Recyclable food packaging
Can be collected and reprocessed into new materials. PET plastic, cardboard and certain paper-based containers are widely recyclable. South Africa's EPR regulations require producers to fund recycling programs.
4. Bagasse (sugarcane) packaging
Made from the fibrous residue left after extracting sugarcane juice. Bagasse plates, bowls and clamshells are a direct, cost-effective replacement for styrofoam — and are 100% compostable. Growing fast across Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya.
5. Plant-based (PLA) packaging
