Why fresh produce packaging matters more than ever

Fresh produce packaging does three critical jobs: it protects the product during transit, presents it attractively on the shelf, and signals to retailers and consumers that it meets quality standards.

For African exporters, the stakes are highest at the point of export. EU and Middle Eastern retailers have strict specifications for packaging dimensions, ventilation, labelling and materials. A shipment that arrives in off-spec packaging can be rejected entirely — regardless of produce quality.

Fresh produce packaging types explained

Punnets and clamshells

The standard retail format for berries, grapes, cherry tomatoes and small produce. Clear PET punnets maximise visibility and are compatible with standard packhouse equipment. rPET (recycled PET) options are increasingly required by EU buyers.

Ventilated open trays

For tomatoes, peppers, stone fruit and bulk produce. Ventilation slows deterioration by allowing airflow and reducing condensation. Foam-free alternatives are now widely available and increasingly mandated by major retailers.

Bags and mesh nets

The standard format for citrus, potatoes, onions and root vegetables. HDPE mesh nets are UV-stable and durable. Kraft paper bags are growing in popularity for premium and organic produce brands.

Export cartons

Corrugated export cartons are the backbone of African fresh produce exports. FSC-certified single and double-wall options are available. ISPM-15 certification is required for most international markets.

Flow wrap and sleeves

For cucumbers, corn, peppers and individual items. Paper sleeves are replacing single-use shrink wrap as the sustainable standard — EU retailers are actively pushing this transition.

Fresh produce packaging for export: key requirements

Produce packaging for specific African export crops

Avocados (South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania)

Two-piece telescopic cartons are the standard for avocado export. 10kg capacity, single-layer arrangement, with ventilation holes compliant with EU import specifications.

Flowers and vegetables (Kenya)

Kenya is the largest exporter of cut flowers to Europe. Specialised ventilated cartons and sleeves maintain humidity and temperature during long-haul transit. EU retail specifications vary by buyer — Amka can supply spec-compliant packaging.

Citrus (South Africa, Ghana)

Mesh nets in 1kg and 2kg sizes are the retail standard. South African citrus exporters supply Tesco, Sainsbury's and Aldi — all of whom have specific packaging specifications Amka can meet.

Fresh berries (South Africa, Kenya)

Clear PET punnets in 125g, 250g and 500g sizes are the EU retail standard. rPET options are increasingly required. Ventilated lids and stackable designs are essential for efficient cold chain transport.
